Seventeen Improvisations on a Book by James Joyce
A Reimagining of Finnegans Wake

Tim Ahern

Picture
“I was blown away from the start…something most remarkable, rich in Joycean references and as complex and creative as the Wake itself. It’s an amazing artistic achievement, totally original, and unlike anything on Joyce and his writing that I’ve read before.”
-Bill Cole Cliett, author of Riverrun to Livvy and A Finnegans Wake Lextionary

“Truly a work of genius! . . . Ahern has created a kind of parallel universe, clearly aligned with Joyce’s work, that offers fresh perspective and new insight. Reading his Improvisations, the Wake is re-revealed.”
– Mary Flannery, D.C. Wake reading group founder

“Dante had Virgil to help us through hell. We have Ahern to guide us through the richest dream ever written.”
–Michael Koran, member of two Boston Wake reading groups and author of Verse to Better

Perfect for those seasoned Wakeans and novitiates alike on your gift list!

This book is the fruit of a seven-year effort by writer/illustrator Tim Ahern: improvised narratives, each related to a different chapter of the Wake. They can be used as an inventive guide to Joyce's original novel (as has been done by the Thirsty Scholars of Boston and the DC Wake reading group during their creation), or read for their own pleasure, stocked as they are with fresh and illuminating references to the fascinating historical and literary details woven into the Wake. Readers can link the narratives in this book to the Wake using the concordance at the back of the book that matches each page of the improvisations with those of the original Wake text.
